Eleonora Alvarez de Toledo y Osorio was Cosimo I de’ Medici’s first wife. Eleonora is still remembered to day for her blazing beauty: she had light brown hair and eyes of a chestnut colour, her face a perfect oval, sweet features displaying an innate majesty. Though it was a wedding by proxy and the spouses had never met, Eleonora and Cosimo really loved each other, as journals and letters they exchanged show
